Emotional Support Dogs (ESDs)
Heeling Allies trains suitable shelter/rescue dogs as well as pre-owned dogs to become loyal, supportive, non-judgmental, loving allies. These dogs provide therapeutic, physiological and psychological benefits to individuals facing a wide range of life challenges; ranging from loneliness and isolation, to grief and loss, to living with illness, such as cancer or Multiple Sclerosis, by providing affection and companionship, and encouraging positive motivation.
- ESD owners do not have to have a documented disability.
- ESDs trained by Heeling Allies are permitted to live with their owners in all housing, including “No Pet Housing,” according to the Fair Housing Act (FHA).
- Heeling Allies can assist you with all aspects of Emotional Support Dog ownership, from finding an ESD that is right for you, to training and proper care.
An Emotional Support Dog is any dog that provides therapeutic benefit to its owner. Emotional Support Dogs are different from Mental Health Service Dogs as their primary purpose, level of training, task performance and public access rights are different.
The primary purpose of an Emotional Support Dogs is to provide it's owner with affection, companionship, and encourage positive motivation.
Heeling Allies trains Emotional Support Dogs to become steady, stable, well-mannered allies; however unlike a Mental Health Service Dog, they are not trained to perform certain tasks. Emotional Support Dogs trained by Heeling Allies, possess strong obedience skills, take direction promptly and willingly, have kind dispositions; and are good with adults, children and other animals. Our Emotional Support Dogs do not exhibit unfavorable behaviors such as: bidding for unwanted attention, unwanted barking, aggression of any sort towards – humans or other animals, excessive nervousness or anxiousness, or destructive tendencies.
According to the Fair Housing Act (FHA) Emotional Support Dogs are allowed to live with their owners in all housing, including “No Pet Housing.” Emotional Support Dog owners are exempt from having to pay a pet deposit. However, unlike Mental Health Service Dogs, Emotional Support Dogs do not have public access rights.

Q. Who can benefit from owning an Emotional Support Dog trained by Heeling Allies?
A. Any individual who is experiencing a life challenge and would like a supportive ally.
Emotional Support Dogs can be therapeutic for individuals who are experiencing life challenges, such as:
- Grief & Loss (e.g. death of a loved one, job loss or bankruptcy).
- Physical Health Conditions/Illness (e.g. Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Arthritis or chronic pain).
- Mental Health Conditions (e.g. depression, anxiety, PTSD and Asperger's or Autism)
- Difficult Life Transitions (e.g. moving, changing careers or breakups/divorce).

Heeling Allies, LLC, Emotional Support Dog Training Program, Pre-Qualification Requirements:
Individuals must:
- Provide a letter from a mental health care provider
(i.e. physician, nurse practitioner, counselor, psychologist, etc.) stating A) he/she
believes you would benefit from owning an Emotional Support Dog and, B)
he/she is certain that you are capable of providing a dog with
exceptional care.
- Provide 3 personal references.
